ROANNA BRAZIER
HEAD COACH WOMEN'S SOFTBALL
OHIO UNIVERSITY
continuation of Coach Brazier's bio
In 2001, Brazier guided Ohio to its most wins since 1995. The Bobcats
enjoyed wins over Big Ten opponents Indiana, Illinois and Purdue, as
well as season sweeps against Rutgers, Detroit, Dayton, Western
Michigan, Buffalo and Toledo on their way to a 32-23 record. Five
players earned All-MAC recognition from that squad. Overall, 18
Bobcats have earned all-conference accolades under Brazier.

Last summer, Brazier and five Bobcats – both past and present players
for her – were selected to be part of a team that represented the
United States in a tournament against The Netherlands Olympic women’
s fast-pitch softball team to ‘ready’ the Dutch squad for the 2004
Olympic Games. During the event, Brazier held the distinctive honor of
being the head coach of the American team that featured some of the
region’s top NCAA Division I softball athletes. Current Bobcat players
Sarah Melvin, Kiersten Scrima and Chapman accompanied her on the
trip.

High academic standards and excellence in the classroom have been
staples in Ohio softball under Brazier’s reign. Kelli Bankert became the
first Ohio softball player to be named to the Verizon Academic All-
American second team in 2001 after maintaining a 3.97 grade point
average. In 1999, the Bobcats ranked ninth in the nation in GPA among
Division I softball programs. During Brazier’s time at Ohio, there have
also been five Alumni Association Scholar-Athletes, three Academic All-
MAC selections and two MAC Commissioner Award winners.

While Brazier was an assistant coach with the program, the Bobcats
compiled a 92-67 record over a three-year span. In 1995, she helped the
Bobcats win the MAC Championship and advance to the NCAA
Regionals.

Before accepting the assistant coaching job at Ohio, Brazier spent
three seasons (1991-93) as an assistant coach at Johnson (Kan.)
Community College. She helped the Cavaliers to a 33-12 record and a
season-high No. 2 ranking in the NJCAA poll. While coaching at JCCC,
she worked in Kansas City as an exercise physiologist at St. Luke’s
Hospital and Baptist Medical Center.

From 1987-90, Brazier was an All-Big Eight Conference performer at the
University of Kansas. Pitching and playing first base, the three-time all-
conference selection set six Jayhawk season and career records,
including innings pitched (960.2) and victories (86). In 1990, she earned
All-Midwest Region accolades after posting a 28-7 record with a 0.93
ERA.
